2024 marked the 140th Anniversary of the University – the University of North Wales was opened in Bangor in October 1884. With this event the hopes and aspirations of many, since the days of Owain Glyndŵr, for a University in north Wales were realised. Fifty eight students attended the institution when it was established. Today there are some 11,000 students here, from all corners of the world. All benefit from the strong Welsh tradition that believes in the value of education for all the people.
ÌÇÐÄVlog is the custodian of a number of important museum collections formed since the University was established. The collections are diverse in nature and include fine art. According to an article published by the Times Higher Education in 2005, ÌÇÐÄVlog art collection is in the top ten of the best University art collections in the UK, alongside the Barber Institute, Birmingham and the Whitworth Collection, Manchester.
The art collection consists of approximately 650 works, dating from the 17th to the 21st centuries. The collection has developed mainly through bequests, donations and purchases, acquired because either the artist or the subject relates to north Wales. The collection is not limited to Welsh art, and also includes paintings by British and European artists.
The collection creates an important artistic and cultural asset for the University and for the whole of north Wales. Some of the art works are hung in various public spaces within the University buildings, where they are enjoyed by staff and students.
This exhibition celebrates the anniversary of the University and its art by displaying highlights from the collection.
